Since we just had the MM update and you have now had time to decide you still hate it...
This would a good time to review exactly what you expect from a "good" matchmaking system. I now have about 40 Very High players on my friends list. Nevertheless it is still rarely the case that 5 of them are available to play at the exact same time, even if 7 or 8 are playing dota at the same time.
The reason you can almost never get 5 very high ranked players on 1 team in matchmaking is the same reason I can't get them from my friends list which is a much smaller pool but can be coordinated with messages. Its because the best players really are rare and since there are not many of them any given 3 min que time period there are not 10 of them trying to start a dota game that don't already have a party.
So MM can't select them because they don't exist in the que.
I've got two ideas on how to deal with this real problem instead of just endless complaining. Let me know what you think before I try to sell this to Valve.
The first is for team matching/pub stacks. Have a Challenge option. Let the top rated teams (lets say top 10 average MMR teams in the que) make their average rating public. Let stacks of players see their rating and send a challenge to one of the top teams they want to take on. Then the challenged team gets to see XXXX MMR team has challenged you and accept of decline the challenge.
The 2nd idea is for solo matching/groups less than 5....Give the freedom to choose to wait longer for a better match. Sure sometimes a good match just does not exist in a given 2-3 min time. Maybe you are willing to wait for 10 min to get it? Maybe you don't care about quality and just want to play now? Select the range of MMR you will accept for your game.
+/- 100 MMR, wait a long time but everyone is very similar skill/experience
+/- 400 MMR, wait the typical 2-3 minutes, basically what they have now for most players but still better for top rated players
My MMR is something like 4,000. I don't know but based on what team MMRs get when I join its something like that. If I play against people who are 4800 (the level of the weakest pro players) I get easily beaten. If I play against an average player (ie 3K) again the game is a joke, I win without trying. If they just limited it to a +/- 400 every game would be possible for either team to win. I would be happy to wait longer to get it.
Currently most players get +/- 400 MMR but for the top rated players that does not happen because there are so few people with ratings that high. Usually their are not enough of them in the que in a 3 min period. But maybe there would be enough in a 10 min period. Give us the choice of waiting longer.
I think the solution for the MM system is to completely rework it.

On anyone's profile you should these see 3 numbers:
- Rating
- Played MM games
- Abandoned games
I know that there are many people who oppose visible ratings but with my system it won't cause any problem (ie. flame low MMR players in your team). See reasons below.

Casual mode. Like the Solo MM right now. Bad but newcomers can learn the basics there and if you doesn't like the below competitive mode you can play here. Your enemies' and allies' name are not shown (only Blue, Teal, Purple, ....). It is anonymous. You can't check anyone's profile. All new accounts have to play a certain number of games here before competitive mode (this is some kind of antismurf).

Competitive mode. Only for teams. How does it work?
You can join as a pre-stack 5 or use the quick-team-creator.
Quick team creator:
Anyone (after a certain number of games in casual mode) can start creating a quick team in a lobby. If you are in a party your partymembers will automatically join the team. You have to give some parameters of the team you are creating:
- Rating interval of the players who can join (you and your party members have to be in it too)
- Number of games interval of the players who can join (you and your party members have to be in it too)
- Language, server
- Game mode (ap, sd, rd, ....)
- ...
- Optional description (fast, gogo; We need a support and an offlane; picking 5 carries lulz :D)
After you created your team people can join your team (if they are in the above mentioned rating and game count intervals). This is something similar to the DotA 1 lobbies but you are only forming a 5-man team not a whole 10-man match.
Let's assume 5 people are already in your team. The team creator can kick anybody before they decide to start playing. They can talk over their tactics. The players will recognize if someone annoys him (no English, don't know how to play, doesn't want to cooperate/communicate, ....) BEFORE THE GAME BEGINS. So they can leave the team before a bad match starts where team mates hates each other from the beginning (mid or feed; pick tank; why sniper gg).
If all team member push the "Ready" button then the team will be put in a match maker where other already ready teams are waiting. In this MM only the average MMR will count. The search range can be controlled by the team leader (not automatically increasing like now). If there are 2 teams whose search range crosses each other they will be paired and the match begins.
This matchmaker takes more time (if you are not a premade 5-stack). But! The team members will "know" each other before the match begins. They accept each other. No more frustration about retarded teammates were given by a retarded MM. After some successful matches you will find a lot of friends. Less reports needed.
What does this system accomplish compared to the current one?
- Language/region problems
- Bad picks and lanes (you can talk it over before the team is created)
- Surrender problems
- Smurf problems
- It will lessen the number of reports
- and many more
Of course this would be a lot of work from the developers. And you cannot implement it step-by-step. All have to be done in one patch. The public ratings/number of games/abandons are necessary. Otherwise you could not tell with whom do you form teams.

I think most people are more interested in Play Now, than match quality or winning. Longer waits for higher level games should be completely optional however it is done.

There would be a lot of players who just want to play and they can create lobbies with less restrictions and they don't have to talk over strategies. Everyone gets the matches and game experience what they want.
