ok here's my take on this, a verdict that I hope is close to the truth:
the world, it IS what you make of it, it never changed. you DO have full control of a large majority of senses you receive, and give out. That is your basic meaning of being alive and pretty much most of what defines you. You don't need to prove to anyone, just by breathing you are you already. Just by thinking, dreaming, all that, you are already you.
But the world, from a sand to cosmos, is much larger than you. You are undeniably part of it, and you cannot step out of the picture. You have responsibilities, as part of a whole. Do you want a better world? Start by doing better things. Do you distinguish between good and evil? then make that not only in your "mind", but your actions too. Because mind doesn't change human condition, action does. No, you cannot do it alone, but you will not get close by giving up or doing the opposite, so there really isn't much of a choice.
All the things you receive, by naturally being part of the world, they are NOT you, they don't define you. They do define you if you choose to let them get to you. But they don't make your decisions for you. That is to say, you need to make sure that it is by the end of the day, YOU, who controls your own actions, not anyone else. Because nobody knows your mind. And naturally nobody cares about your mind. They care about your actions, and it is your actions that, to them, defines you. And that difference is why without being a professional actor, you need to try to be truthful to yourself. By that I mean if you are a good person, do good things, not bad ones. Don't let bad things and people get to you, don't let people assimilate you. Ask yourself this: do I really want to indulge in hurting others and getting hurt? Or do I want to indulge in making others' live better, and having a better life? Because whatever you do, it will always get back to you. Understand karma, and try to never forget. And remember, there is only a fine line between good and evil, and the road is long and perilous, so every tiny step counts.
