Why do some people with 55%-60% win rates get "Normal Skill" while others with 48% winrates get "High Skill"? in General Discussion

    Sooooo,

This is not a troll thread... I'm honestly curiious.

I've been looking around DOTABUFF a bit these days and I've come across a few players who have 500-1000 games and 58% or even higher winrrates and yet they are still in "Normal matchmaking"

http://www.dotabuff.com/players/68243654 - This guy for example.

I'm too lazy to hunt around right now but you all know the "other" kind of players. Around 100 games total... nothing amazing in their KDA, XPM and GPM around 400 and yet they are getting "High skill" matches.

So ummm... yeh.... what's the deal... who do you have to shag to get into "High Skill" bracket these days?

Cos' I'm not having sex with Gabe! :D

I realise that they are smurf accounts but even so if you can't even maintain a 50% winrate how are you "high skilled"?

One last thing! I'm NOT talking about myself... I know I'm solo-Q pub trash that will prob never reach High Skill.... but I'm just curious as this seems like an anomoly to me...

In ranked matchmaking (at least sub 4k) apparently the ONLY thing that counts for improving your MMR is your winrate.

    TripleSteal-

the question is which games ytou are winning. for example, a 3k player can have 45% winrate if placed in 4k, and 60% winrate in 2k.

      Giff me Wingman

some people calibrate at higher MMR that's why. If you calibrate at 4k and then lose a bunch because it was 2 high, then you end up with 3.5k (high) skill and 48% winrate. While others calibrate at 1k and play until they get 3.5k then they have 60%

              Also Party matchmaking.

              Relentless

There are 5 different MMRs, Team, Party Ranked, Party Unranked, Solo Ranked, and Solo Unranked.

It's possible to win more games in some of these and yet lose in others.

Also your calibration makes a big difference. If you calibrate at 2k MMR, then win a ton of games up to 3k your winrate will be far above 50% for a while until it eventually evens out with time. Or someone could calibrate to 4.5k MMR and be overrated ending up with a below 50% winrate.

So to know what the stats really mean you have to look at the details of someone's history.

The net wins/loses number is much more important than the % winrate. But even that is divided among the five MMRs and depends on calibration. For example, since I am at a net (+80 wins) you know that I have gained about 2,000 MMR points above my calibration. But you don't know which MMR that was and how its distributed, and you don't know which MMRs I calibrated where. For that you have to look into the details and see that some of my MMRs are in Normal, some are in High, and some in Very High.

I find it amazing that your winrate is better in VHS then in normal skill.

Each time I play in normal skill with friends, I end up destroying their mid if I go something like SF, Lina or even Viper/Slark..

Sometimes I just yolo and try out new stuff, so that's why I don't have a better winrate in normal skill.\

I would really say I could get above 70% at least if I really try hard.

i think team matchmaking was complete removed in s2, wasnt it?

                      You are correct TripleSteal

                      Relentless

Well 4 mmr's left then, the same basic principle.

My winrate is better in Very High because I tryhard to win those games. I use the other ones to just practice things and have fun. The Normal and High games I random heroes a lot, about 1/3 of games so I lose a lot more even though they are much easier games.

Okay I am winning 57 % of games but someone who has played less then me is winning 48 % of games but they are in high skill and I am in normal skill.

Now I get the point where I lose the wrong games or whatever but I think the matchmaking is a bit unfair if I win a higher portion of my games at this skill level but then I don't get an extended chance to improve myself against opposition that beat me more often so I can learn and improve. Like I think the fact that I have 57 % win rate over 1500 games shows that matchmaking was a bit broken for me... I should be winning 50 % or thereabouts.

most normal skill players who get into vhigh with party MMR have a higher winrate because they have a personal coach babysitting them
