Mechanical keyboard in General Discussion
Yoshi

So I decided to buy a new mechanical keyboard.
I had no previous experience with them but I've read about em online.

What do you guys think about them and which one would you recommend for Dota?
Considering the double tap for self casting and the button spamming that sometimes happens when u wait a skill to come off cooldown.

What thinking for Cherry Brown but I may be mistaken.
    Thoughts?

    Bad Intentions

Please provide pics of mech keyboard.

What pictures? I look for an opinion on someone who already uses one and can advise on how they work and feel

They are feeling much better but the typing is getting louder, at least for me

            @Aimstrong
Yes but there are many different MX Cherry switches, what do you recommend and why?
I dont care about the noise

What kinda tactical feedback are you looking for? If you want loud and 'clicky' then go for blue, if you want a softer feedback then go for red or browns. Ive got the Corsair K70 with red switches. Had it for 2 years, and I love it, but my opinion is biased cause its the only one Ive had.

Bought my first mechanical keyboard this week which is the Ducky Mini. Overall, the feeling is so much better. I think any switches work fine on gaming. I'm using an mx blue switch and they are fine. Most people prefer the mx reds for gaming as it is linear and double tapping is pretty easy. The only downside is that I can't use my laptop keyboard anymore since I realized how bad it was compared to my mech. It's worth it. I suggest you buy the switches you prefer since any mx switch will be better than a rubber dome for dota 2 in general

I don't know the difference between those because the one I am using right now was also my first mechanical keyboard.

                    Maybe this will help

Thanks mate, I'll check those right now

                      @Dominus
I don't care if the keyboard is noisy or not. What interest me is that the double tap of a key is very responsive (i think for example when i self cast heali on omniknight or use a TP scroll)

How do you feel about this with your K70?

Like honestly it doesn't matter, they are all decent. It's just some kb's are overpriced. You can buy tester kits that have the most common switch types to see which one you like (there are many available online) or you can go to the store directly and check.

                              e.g. switch tester - http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-6-key-cherry-mx-switch-tester.html

If you are after a very easy and responsive dbl tap then the reds are the way to go. The k70 registers key input at like .3 mm or something which makes it insanely easy to dbl tap. Just note that typing becomes harder and you have to get used to it.

I'm using a Cherry MX Board 3.0 with MX brown switches. It costs 60€, so around half of those "gaming keyboards", and still has a very solid quality. If you don't care about colored keys or fancy accessories that's a pretty good deal.

On the switches: I pondered quite long about that as well, tested some keyboards in a big store and finally choose MX brown. They are tactile (light feedback at 50% of the way, where all MX switches trigger the actual key press) and not as loud as MX blues. They feel quite amazing when typing (as do all tactile switches) and I had no problems while gaming, including double presses. Only downside: It's very easy to press them, more so than the keys on my old rubberdome keyboard, which means that you have to take more care to not press them by accident. The same holds true for non-tactile MX red, which need the same force as MX brown. If it's important for you to not have too "light" keys, the non-tactile MX black should be the right choice. MX blue (tactile) are just too frigging loud. There are other switch types, but as they are not available for the MX Board 3.0 I didn't consider them.

^ Browns have 45g actuation force, compared to 50g of Blues (it's not that different). You can also get Cherry MX clears which are a bit harder than Browns or Blues (55g actuation), and don't make the clicky sound that rapes ears like normally do w/o O-rings.

I have blacks, I'm still not really used to them since I usually type at work, and pretty much never at home.

                                        Yoshi

I think I've narrowed it down to Brown
Thanks for the additional info Socram, my idea is to buy a competitive keyboard that gets the job done and improves my performance in gaming overall, I dont care about LEDs that much nor anything special, a side feature I'd love to have tho is the USB port on it for my mouse as I do have now.

Kitty how do you find yourself in gaming with it? have you tried?

                                          Mandalorian

Imho for the first user of Mechanical keyboards i would recommend MX Cherry Browns all the way. They're overall great for everything, are not loud and you know when a key was pressed. I have CM Storm Quickfire TK and i love that keyboard.

If you like loud keys when pressed go for Cherry Blue (they also have tactile switch so you know when you pressed the key). I would stay away from Keys that do not have tactile switch, cause you can accidently press a key which you dont want (MX Red) although they say they're great for gamers. I think they're too light for gaming.

I'm buying from Germany usually (hardwareversand.de or computeruniverse) so you can check there whatever looks best to you and post here so i can help you more when i have time.

Btw - Logitecs are great, Corsair, Coolermaster, Ducky were great but have lots of build issues lately, so i've heard and are expensive. You can also consider some lower priced ones which are great like - Func, Ozone, Cherry (who make cherry switches btw), etc.

                                            Yoshi

how about the ENTER button guys?
I've seen many keyboards that are basically with a smaller ENTER button while i usually use the bigger one (see pic below)
Is that because of the German layout or?

(left I like, right I dont)
                                              http://www.dancingmango.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/keyboard.jpg

                                              Mokujin

I don't think a keybaord will "improves my performance in gaming overall". They just feel good for typing lol.

                                                Mandalorian

German layouts always have big enter, so thats the way to go :)

Btw - you can be more accourate on mechanical keyboard and the typing experience is so much nicer... You have to try it for yourself, it's completely different world compared to normal keyboards.

                                                  Yoshi

It depends, right now I am using an old Logitech keyboard that is also badly responsive on some of the keys, especially the space button (which i also binded in game). Also from what I have read in the various reviews, there seems to be an increase in performance because of the response and overall feel, tho I may still be mistaken ofc.

                                                    Yoshi

                                                      @1234
they keyboard u suggested is with the small enter (on their website) are you saying despite that you have a BIG enter key because its german?

                                                      Noé

I use them, took me two months to get fully acquainted with it. The first few days are awful. But man, it's worth it. After using it, all other keyboards feel bad.

                                                        Yoshi

alright I decided to take this one

and thats ONLY because of the mouse USB ports

Otherwise I would've got this one as Socram suggested

Not a bad choice at all.

it's decent for the price (wrist rest woo0) especially if you get the 2 years warranty

                                                                        Filthy

I am pretty fast at it tho Cuz I type / click all day at work average is one word typed before I click next box . So I basically have completly forgotten using home row / two hand typing . However when playing Dota I use my index finger , middle finger and thumb , would a key board help at all ? I know itd prolly help with my space bar , I always put ultimates as space bar and on heroes that you double tap ult I struggle with it due to shitty response from space bar.

                                                                          Ariaflutter.Ataraxia

i don't like mechanical keyboard. it click so hard that everybody can hear it sound.

and you press harder for the mechanical keyboard too. so more energy consumed to simple click on keyboard.

                                                                            Mandalorian

Totally depends of the keys you have. You can have switches so light to press, you wont even realize when they were pressed, same goes for the sound they make.
