^^
manta is generally a horrible offensive item when not on PL, Morph, Naga, TB or Luna
or other heroes with skills that work on illusions like Desolate and Mana Break
most other heroes have terrible stat scaling with illusions, in those cases it is gotten defensively to disjoint spells such as Global Silence
alternatively its a pretty decent counter against a snowballing TA because psi blades dont cleave off illusions
You forgot spectre and anti mage. It can be good on tiny sometimes. Also any hero you end up building diffusal on does pretty well with manta.
But I agree, can't stand when people build it on jug, razor, viper, although viper I kind of get cus yasha is really nice on him but he has no use for sange proc.
never buy mana on DPS heroes like sniper unless VERY very late manta is lategame item on all heroes..
Viper is slightly different story, due to his passive working on illusions. I am actually thinking about Manta on Enchantress. Those clones will be a real pain in the ass to kill.
If viper buys manta , why shouldn't axe , it's more effective and tanky illusions.
edited my post
axe illusions actually spin so it's quite interesting
but by the time you get manta usually your spin is starting to drop off in effectiveness.
the occasional illusion rune is really nice though.
Besides, axe needs more tanky items apart from his core..so taht he gets in more spins in a fight.
I'm against viper manta, but I'm for viper yasha sometimes and manta is better for him than sange and yasha. So occasionally you get it.
manta is a good item late game if you already have DPS like daedalus or already shotgun. But to complete it as your 2nd or 1st item is very bad. Morphling needs 2-3 items before he can make manta also some AOE lineup like leshrac, lina etc... can just instantly kill illusions, hence "this isnt' a manta game".
Manta axe is very amusing. Let's u split push super hard with ur illusions. I've rushed it before and it's been pretty funny (tho I suck at axe).
One thing that really annoys me is when people get manta on TA unless there's some really gay stuff that needs to be dodged because the blades and your main skills don't scale at all with manta.
Manta is also good on Chaos Knight (they blinkstrike) and invis heroes like Clinkz and Riki to remove Dust of Appearance
Manta is also great on Meepo (Hard-carry build ofc), illusions get double stats from his ult, additional geostrikes, bates, poofing on them
"i almost never use manta offensively, i only use it as a distraction or to disjoint things" - Singx2
one exception to the rule is when pushing or farming, its okay to leave manta illus to continue working on the tower etc.
Manta dps is amazing, 60% damage increase or something? but the best part of manta is to disjoint stuns, targetting and anything else that comes your way.
manta is only 60% when you are a pure stat hero
on someone like TA manta is like piss poor 50-60 per hit when your damage comes from phase, deso, refraction
it's great for pushing, but only on stat-inclined heroes
Zenoth what do you think about Manta vs. Sange & Yasha on Shadow Fiend? He usually builds damage instead of stats so wouldn't S&Y be the better pickup generally?
S&Y would be great if you just want to tank up, usually against heroes with high burst or can lock you down for a long while.
Like: Faceless Void
However, Manta would be good to splitpush also disjoint projectiles, thus Manta would be more useful usually.
SF doesn't really benefit too much of the movespeed of SnY either, since he's a long range hero with lot of uptime in fights.
I'm not convinced of that. Manta is indeed better if there are spells to disjoint with it, but otherwise I feel like S&Y gives you more offensively than Manta (except on heroes that specifically take advantage of the extra illusions). Especially on Shadow Fiend, who has absolutely no CC, this item is great IMO. If you try to solo kill a non-support and you aren't way ahead they can literally just walk away from you. With S&Y you can chase them down as well as slow them with the passive maim (which is really underrated and goes through BKB).

Hey guys
I recall watching a pro game where a morphling buys a manta style. The commentator then proceeds to say "This is not really a manta game". When should we buy manta and when should we not buy manta? Thanks!
