I ran him mid couple of times and it worked well. phase>drums>mek>dagon was my build. and it was effective. after mek it's situational though but I would always get phase-drums-mek.
Necro is a mid hero. Depending on your skill level it might not work, he's very vulnerable to smoke ganks. If left unmolested in lane though, you should zone out the enemy mid and get a fast mek. He then absolutely demolishes the mid-game.
Necro really comes "online" at levels 7 and 10. At level 7 you have the highest burst damage and at level 10 you can push creep waves extremely fast and farm stacked camps at no mana cost.
Ok, makes sense. And how about the skills? 1 level aura, max heal -> max regen aura -> max aura ?
He will easily get crushed by good mid heroes { SF, OD , Razor, Syla, Viper, DK, (Puck and QoP - depends on skill level )}.
Max aura and heal, ( necro has bad last hit ). Go pt > meka ( or skip it , i particulary hate meka on him ) > armlet > disarm > agha etc

Itemization on Necro is extremely variable, try to adapt to what is necessary
Ye, due to necro beeing last-long-teamfight carry. He doesn't get big str , and with armlet he gets what he neds. Aslo with heal and his third, he wont feel negative regen from armlet.
As JDF said, you can build literary anything on him
he's usually played mid or safelane farm
