So there are advantages and disadvantages to public ratings... I'm trying to figure out a way to keep the advantages and mitigate the disadvantages.

    1. Make ratings private.
    2. Once per month, compile list of active players (determined by rating system a la "RD" in glicko system, or something similar like X games played in last Y months, whatever).
    3. Split into groups, and publish which group a player belongs to in his public profile.

Then you could get a very general idea of another player's skill and hopefully remove a lot of the e-peen nonsense.

Honestly, I think it'd be good if ratings were only update once a month even in private profiles. That's enough to give a feeling about whether you're improving while removing the immediacy of ratings, and prevent some flaming.

Another interesting aspect would be how you split the players -- You could do something like 10 equal-sized groups, but you could also do things like make each successive group larger... So 'A' could have 100 players, 'B' the next 200, 'C' the next 400, 'D' the next 800, and so on.

Or you could incorporate standard deviations from the mean rating as your grouping mechanism...

I'm all for making stats public but I played HoN and can definitely see why people are hesitant. That's why although I don't agree fully with all your ideas, I do think they can form the basis of a great compromise. I've never posted on here before but your post inspired me to because it was actually intelligent and I'm intrigued by some of your suggestions. I hope dotabuff and the community here gives this post a solid read and build upon what you've started (I especially like the groups. It reminds me of the starcraft 'silver gold platinum diamond' type of system which I liked). Anyway, great job mattieshoes.

Make it so you see only your own rating + steam friends ratings. It's great to compare ratings with friends, without always needing to ask them personally. Also those people who are "verified" as proplayers and such, could have public rating so you can compare yourself to them.

I think that they should make all the Dotabuff ratings public, but many people seem to think this is a bad idea. As a compromise I would suggest making it so that you can set an option to make your rating public, and when it is enabled you will be able to see anyone else's rating who also have turned the option on.

You can make it so that once you make it public you must wait at least a month before making it hidden again to discourage people from enabling it only to view someone else's rating then going back to private immediately after.

stop crying about flaming - no one give an "f" if you feel miserable when somebody is picking up on you. ratings should be public everytime and for everyone. the only reason i see why people want to hide their rating is cause they afraid that they are terrible and everybody will find this out.

If the only problem with public stats is that people will alt-tab and judge others by their dotabuff rating (which is a totally legitimate concern) I would suggest making rating request delayed. So I will go to someone's profile and request their rating. After a day I go on their page and only then I can see the rating. Since encountering the same person multiple times in MM is unlikely this would prevent the issue. At the same time I would still be able to check people in my previous matches.

I *am* terrible, and I couldn't care less who knows. I just don't want to hear a bunch of whining and arguing before every game about who picks what or plays what role based on some number on a website, which will inevitably be taken out of context. Attributing false motives to those who disagree with you is just dumb.

                ¸.-·*'*·-.¸.-·*'*·-.¸.-·*...

Its fu**ing DBR rating, you wont see shit ingame.. Noone will open Dotabuff just to check if hes +13 ELO or not.

iTM | №1 Axe.. You might be surprised about that statement. I already see the creeps spawning and some players not having picked their hero because they are checking 9 other players DBR
