From my DotA 1 knowledge
I would start with 3 branches + tango + healing salve
Early on you want Magic stick and Ring of Basi
Soul Ring is great to keep pressuring, you build arcane boots early and travel late game
Extension =
-vanguard
-hood of defiance
-necro (inspect your team)
-mekansm
Luxury =
-must have travel boots (this hero pretty much requires it late game)
-must have pipe (enemy team will often counter pick pitlord with AOE high ground defense heroes)
-assault cuirass (inspect your team)
-shiva's guard is a big deal for pitlord
-Heart of Tarassque also boost this hero a lot in many situations
-BKB this could become important late game when pipe fade out
-Abyssal blade you buy this after assault cuirass most of the time
Situational stuff =
-blink dagger (if your team is afraid of initiating, pitlord can do it to a certain extend) (also you can save your teamates with dark rift)
-vlad
-force staff
-veil of discord
Bad items IMO =
-Rod of atos slow is nice but no mana regen
-most orbs effect
-radiance, this hero is too fast pace to sit in jungle and farm early game radiance
-no agi item like manta
-Linkens (unless doom harass you big time, since doom is a good counter for pitlord)
-no invis stuff, this hero escape with his ultimate

General Strat
This hero is fun to push early because firestorm does good damage to towers, you can gank early with dark rift and pressure the tower again and again. You probably bought Soul Ring and/or Arcane boots so pitlord is super annoying and your enemies hate you, it is a real spam machine and you can really lock them out of the farm.
Pitlord can be more tanky, or semi-carry or full blown support, you may have to buy wards and gem
To play with pitlord and help him snowball the game, build mana items like arcane boots, you can even pick cristal mayden (he can keep her alive really easy). Pick pusher heroes, pitlord is all about pushing objectives so get deso on some of them. Omni is fine because he keep you alive in pit of malice. You can cheese very hard with Furion, you can backdoor in a couple seconds and bring the game back on your side!
Soul ring
He can clear waves so he can get mek and greaves
Maybe blink and force
He should definetly be played in the offlane though, you want dark rift to gank the fountain minute 5 all the time.
No atrophy aura ? SeemsGood
I Never played honestly but i would get the same items as you maxing firestorm and aura getting on top of That a vlad then getting rosh to take Fast objectives. Except for his ult This hero seems useless late Game.
When you're down 1-2 teammates and you know you're about to lose some racks he is a great counter pusher, even if your team is point blank retarded you can pretty much balance the lane every time. Push with BoT, kill buildings, back with your ult, rince and repeat, his firestorm eat building fast enough to force enemy team to TP back. He's not "useless" past 50m or 1 hour, his role will shift from semi-carry durable to rat doto ish.
I don't know if it will be viable, but an early Crimson Guard with Aura will make your team really tanky to physical damage.
Firestorm used to damage buildings in WC3 DoTA. Why did they change it? (I checked dotapedia and yes it said enemies only.) Seemed like a pretty good concept to a hero that can't do anything better from 111 heroes that can do better than him. Besides that his Ult that makes his whole team appear out of nowhere makes it so that he can utilize that pushing capability. Seems like a shit hero now. EZ -25 MMR.
Imma ban this guy every game. He's too good vs Slark and Riki.
Rip all the much needed damage from stats...........
From my Dota 1 experience -
you start with Q, then E, Q,. 4/1/1/1 is standard at 7 sometimes you skip W and get an extra point in E depending on the situation.
start with boots, ask for tangos.
you'll go mid, but don't actually lasthit, you just need the levels. rush travels as first item
once you reach level 6 you start feeding casually, each lane at the time, it's very important not to concentrate on a single lane.
When you reach level 11 you use your ult and win the game (or lose it's 50/50 at this point) you'll still feed slowly but surely and use your ult everytime it's off cooldown

Since he will be released tomorrow and pretty much everyone will be first picking him, a little advice on what items to get on him would be appreciated.
I'm thinking maybe phase boots into armlet into abyssal blade and AC, but anyways I've never played him before (never played DotA before), so I'd like to hear other people's opinions.
