that can;t happen tbh, each season Valve gives LOW MMR, like i my friend was divine at 5400 mmr now he got 4400 he went 6-4 in recalibration.
^ Then your friend lied to you about his mmr before calibration, because its impossible to drop more than 500 mmr.

yepp Max difference is +/-500 from calibration.
I went 9/1 in my calibration for last season and i only got +250 from my previous Mmr at 5500. Calibrated 5750 last season.
So as someone said earlier. Maybe your friend was divine whatever at some point but dropped down and then recalibrated and got another -500 because he can't play at 5k lvl.
I went 8-2 on this calibration and gained around 350-400 mmr which is slightly higher than the estimate +/- 50mmr per match.
Maybe there are other factors?
